Perforations through the upper sections increase airflow, lowering humidity and temperature inside the tube so the tree hardens off as it grows rather than producing soft, drawn growth that struggles when the shelter is removed. That is worth specifying on upland, coastal and generally windy sites, and on southerly aspects where heat build-up inside a solid tube is a concern.
The shelter itself is manufactured from the same bio-based polymer as the rest of the Vigilis Bio range — derived from potatoes, wood and corn, tested to ISO 17556 for soil biodegradability and EN 13432 for non-toxicity to soil. It gives 3+ years of functional protection and then breaks down over a further 3+ years in suitable soil conditions, leaving water, biomass and minerals.
On remote upland planting this combination is often the whole business case: the sites that most need venting are usually the sites where sending a team back to collect tubes is hardest to justify.
