Voles and field mice girdle bark at ground level under the grass sward, and the damage is typically invisible until the tree fails. A shelter alone does not seal against them — on a site with both deer and voles the correct specification is a shelter at the appropriate height with a vole guard at the base. The guard is a rigid single-wall wrap that push-fits around the stem in seconds with no ties or stakes, at 38mm diameter fitting stems up to 32mm.
Specifying the bio version matters for a specific practical reason: a standard plastic vole guard sitting at ground level inside a biodegradable shelter is the one component that would otherwise still have to be retrieved, defeating the point of the bio specification. In bio form the whole assembly — shelter, fixings and base guard — breaks down together, with 3+ years of functional protection followed by a further 3+ years to biodegrade in suitable soil conditions.
Specify 20cm as standard, and 25cm where the grass sward is heavy or snow cover is expected.
